This beautiful Cherry was gifted to me from a friend in Yorkshire. A characterful A-symmetric coffee scoop or caddy spoon, with an elegant shape. It fits and feels so nicely in the hand.

This is the first from an upcoming series of ‘mythical beings’ spoons I am creating. Starting with the mermaid, the siren sister, the selkie. The strong female form of this queen of the seas has been ‘tattooed’ into the wood using the ancient Swedish form of Kolrosing. Kolrosing is where the design is cut into the wood with the tip of a sharp knife, filled with colour pigment (I use cinnamon), and then the wood is burnished to create a seal over the top of the colouring. Kolrosing is pretty permanent (unless you chip deeper than the design) and allows for intricate designs and shading to be added to wood.

The grain of this cherrywood is just stunning; ripping grain up the handle and rings in the bowl.

Carved by hand tools only, axe and knife, in Wiltshire woodlands. Knife finished, no sanding, to create a smoother finish.

Finished with Tung oil to really bring the grain out.

Time for completion: approx 5.5 hours

Length: approx 12.5 cm

Care Instructions

This is a hand carved wooden item and knife and tool marks may still be present. Please do not put wooden items in the dishwasher. Hand wash only with warm soapy water and leave to air dry. You may wish to oil your spoon every once in a while if it starts looking thirsty. A coat of food safe oil (tung oil, nut oils etc) will nourish the wood and keep it looking fresh.
